Size Counts!!

Okay. Weird thing.

Not weird, I guess, just, hrm. Something I never really thought of before.

Someone in one of my communities was inviting people to a meet up of sorts somewhere in the northern-ish parts of England (idk my UK geography very well) and people were saying things like 'yay I will be there' or 'alas, I cannot make it' &c&c because that is normally happens.

But then I started thinking about like... where this is all going down. I found myself a labeled map and checked out some cities in England and decided to see how long it would take to like, cross the island.

Guys. Google Maps gives me the rough estimate of a trip starting in Plymouth, UK, stopping in Ipswich, UK and ending in Aberdeen, UK at just under 16 hours. THAT'S ACROSS ONE COUNTRY, ALL THE WAY UP AND INTO THE NEXT.

LET'S LOOK AT A MAP.

Significant trip, yes?

Okay, now if my mother left her house now in Whitby, ON, drove up to mine to get me and Katie in North Bay, ON and then we continued on to my uncle's place just out of Thunder Bay, ON (all in one province, not crossing any borders), IT'S ESTIMATED THAT WOULD TAKE ONE HOUR MORE THAN THE FIRST TRIP.

Shorter to drive across an entire country than to go visit my uncle and his hot tub.

LET'S SEE THAT MAP NOW.

Sure, the maps are not on the same scale, BUT YOU CATCH MY DRIFT, RIGHT?

tl;dr!! I'm exhausted and realizing Canada is huge. Also, what's up, UK, I could road trip the hell out of you.

Wow. It takes 16 hours to drive from Home to my school. Imagine if that were the whole freaking country! Big countries are so much more awesome.

In conclusion, North America, FTMFW.

Ahah, I imagine England would be very cool too though. Think of all the places you could see in a month or a year. Now compare it to what you could see in the States or in Canada in the same time. Not as much, right?

I think I want to be an explorer if I grow up.

[identity profile] cherie-morte.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely want to be an explorer (travel writer--same thing, point is travel) when I grow up ^_^

[identity profile] unavoidedcrisis.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
We should explore-slash-timetravel together. I will get us into wacky hijinks and you can write about it AND WE WILL BE FAMOUS.

[identity profile] unavoidedcrisis.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
As in 'do I have a valid license?' No.

I know how, just don't have a car to drive my qualifying exam (aka: G2). But I'm working on it!

[identity profile] cherie-morte.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you get a license and be the driver, and I'll write the column to make us rich/famous and then we will be set and I won't have to keep kicking myself in the head about not knowing how to drive.

\o/

You should learn. It's like, a marketable skill, idk. Everyone should also know how to crochet for the same reason.

[identity profile] cherie-morte.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* I keep meaning to.

It's just.

It requires, like...effort and stuff.

[identity profile] unavoidedcrisis.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
*hiss* The dreaded 'e' word, I understand the hate. That's like me and yoga. I would but... uhh. Too complicated.

*excited for prospect of future road trips*

*like a big labradoodle*

*ugh*

That's like Vietnam!! :DD Now I feel much more motivated to travel all over UK (and much more excited!!!; I've already made plans with my friends for when we graduate...hopefully we stick to it XD).

I also plan on visiting Canada as one of my besties won't stop badgering me to go there (and I've been wanting to visit for some time)...it is quite large [x_________X] Very difficult to believe California is more populated than all of Canada [x___________x]

[identity profile] unavoidedcrisis.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, don't get me started on population density. My mother doesn't like when I say 'Mama, I don't want to live in a city. There is literally thousands of kilometres of completely uninhabited land I could live on and never have to see another person ever!'

She doesn't believe in isolationism. Whatever. I wanna live in the woods in a gypsy caravan.

And I agree. Road trips own. I love being in the car or on a bus and looking at stuff.

The UK is quite small...I can fly from Aberdeen to London in under 2 hours (or take the train, which is about 12). Which community is this, by the way? Because I am actually in Aberdeen at the moment.

[identity profile] unavoidedcrisis.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a Supernatural fan community. I don't think they're actually going to be in Aberdeen, that was just a far north kind of city I picked for the demonstration. /random

I've only been on an airplane once and it was like. Scary. But I would rather fly than take a boat. Maybe I'll just be stranded on this landmass forever.

We're meeting up in Newcastle bb, it's a city right next to where I live and where I went to university. I'm the one who started the trip via twitter actually :D

Words cannot describe how much I want to go on a road trip. I just, you know, have to learn how to drive first.

[identity profile] unavoidedcrisis.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I can drive! Mostly! Kind of! You just get us a vehicle and I'll drive you anywhere. ;)

Also, mad jealous of your meet up.

[identity profile] lady-macbeth-13.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude. Canada is frakin' ginormous.

And it never feels bigger than when you're trapped in a hot vehicle with your entire family on a 'road trip'.

It's a miracle my Dad didn't drive us off a cliff like a pack of lemmings.

[identity profile] unavoidedcrisis.livejournal.com 2010-03-14 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAH! We roadtripped to PEI when I was younger and I can see how that would have gotten irritating. I loved every second of it because I am a big dork, but I didn't have sisters like you have sisters :D I only have the one and I can thump her pretty hard.

PS: I'm imagining the computer games Lemmings now and it's funny.

[identity profile] cheerful-earl.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I want to road trip the hell out of the UK too, now! Man.

Thinking about this stuff is so a mindtrip. It takes like 16 hours to go from one end of my state to the other (I'm in California). Whoa.

Also... You're in North Bay? I live in the North Bay! Totally different North Bays, but whatever.
